St David's Head - watching the sea

Not much activity on the sea this morning. Two red-throated divers that had been feeding close into the cliffs on Monday 21st had presumably moved on. A couple of whimbrel and 7 sandwich terns were the highlights of a quiet morning. Typically, small numbers of hirundines were noted moving south-west or west. All three species were seen with small parties of sand martins appearing just before lunchtime.

Choughs were mobbing a couple of ravens first thing. One appeared to be carrying an egg in it's bill and we feared the worst. Closer scrutiny revealed that the white object was in fact a golf ball! The raven carrying it around seemed proudly attached to this particular trophy anyway!

Late in the afternoon, whilst walking a weekly butterfly transect between Landshipping Quay and  Martletwy, two lesser whitethroats were singing in thick hedgerows close to Landshipping. Butterfly species and numbers were fairly low but a nice female holly blue was laying eggs on holly in one section.
