Jays

Reports today of 16 Jays at Crow Hill, Haverfordwest (Peter Howe) and 10+ at Lochvane heading towards Solva (Steve Jarvis). This comes on top of reports of numbers of Jays elsewhere in the County over recent days (per Adrian Rogers and Steve Berry) and twitter reports from friends in North Norfolk of  numbers moving there. In the past, large movements of Jays have sometimes been of British birds and sometimes Continental birds (glandarius).  I've noted these movements myself on the east coast, and if my memory serves, Scilly. They appear to be the result of acorn crop failures and the race involved depends where the failure occurs. Keep an eye out. Ringers, in particular, may be able to help with the provenance of any birds trapped.
