Pembroke Millpond & River

While chatting to John Hayes late this afternoon we noted 16 greylags flying over Pembroke Millpond towards the river. A female goldeneye on the Middle Pond was a slightly unusual duck here.

Later from John's place at Pennar, there were clearly huge numbers of wigeon feeding in a dense line along the tidal edge of Pembroke River. A quick estimate suggested somewhere in the region of 4,000 to 6,000 ducks (almost all wigeon). Wigeon  numbers often build up in the lower/outer estuary embayments during the early winter period. Presumably they're feeding on the extensive areas of Zostera (eelgrass) beds here at this time.

Seeing the wigeon here in such large numbers serves to remind us of the significance of Pembroke River for this species at this time of year.
