Today’s walk via Coedcanlas, took us through Sam’s Wood and
along the Daugleddau shore and back to Landshipping where we noticed an increase in both
redshank and greenshank numbers – a flock of 30+ of the former (including many
adults in breeding plumage) and 6 greenshanks – the most we’ve seen of these here
since about mid-February.
Lower down the estuary a lone red kite (a probable non-breeding immature bird) was getting some grief from the resident corvids who
moved it on every time it tried to perch in a tree.
Over in Sam’s Wood blackcaps were more audible today,
suggesting some new arrivals. Nuthatches were also quite vocal and busy collecting
estuarine mud to shape up their nest-hole entrance. They’ll be breeding any
day now.
