Pied Flycatchers

The breeding season for Pied Flycatchers is complete for this year. A very good year in Pengelli - not so in the Gwaun Valley. In Pengelli eight pairs nested in the monitored boxes. The scheme here was started in the early eighties, and the current population is approaching the numbers breeding in those early years. 28 young fledged from the six successful boxes.

In Ffynone a pair fledged 6 young, a site where we may add more boxes. This wood was the first known breeding site for Pied Flycatchers in the county (1978)

In the Gwaun Valley, an area monitored by Steve Berry produced no successful breeding though two singing males were present before moving on. Five males were present in 2023. In another area in the Gwaun where Alison monitors boxes for the PC National Park a single pair fledged 4 young from 1 box and a pair nested successfully in a natural tree hole - a rare event these days.
