Green woodpecker and firecrest

At Llandilo this morning, a green woodpecker was seen and heard - probably the same one that was first reported by Den back in August/Sept. It has been heard briefly in the distance several times in between and seems to wander over quite a large area. A firecrest also present yesterday, unusual in the preselis. Generally the woods are quiet apart from where there is beech mast which seems to be the main source of food for all the chaffinches, great tits, nuthatches and jays etc. The arrival of blackbirds that usually occurs in November isn't as noticeable this year and although redwings are being seen daily, there only seems to be small parties of up to a dozen or so. No crossbills about in this area so far though lots of siskins. Now that the leaves have fallen, the local goshawks are much more regularly seen and a male sparring with a red kite and two ravens in a sunny blue sky today was birding at its best!
