Snow Bunting & (Irish) Black Guillemots

The remaining Snow Bunting on Fishguard outer breakwater allowed amazingly close views yesterday as it fed vigorously in a small patch of mud in the concrete.

I did a Ferry trip to Rosslare with Cliff and in the glassy calm conditions yesterday we saw a total of 27 Porpoises, mainly singles, some in groups of 2 and 3, several just resting/logging on the surface. On the bird front plenty of auks in small groups all across the Irish Sea, several Fulmars and Kittiwakes, 4 Gannets and, near Rosslare, a Red Throated Diver. In the morning there were 25 Black Guillemots in the harbour, all in summer plumage and with much courtship/display going on.

The return leg this morning was rather different - a slightly rougher sea meant we saw only 2 Porpoises but we had 42 Gannets, plenty of auks again and, back at Fishguard, 3 Red Throated Divers just outside and one inside the harbour.
