Derek's feathers (2)

Looking at Derek's photo, the feathers look both too small and too dark for Pheasant, even juveniles. The average length of Pheasant primaries that I am currently looking at (used for tying fishing flies) are around 18cm, secondaries 15cm, and they are typically very pale, even males.
Derek's feathers actually look far more like Woodcock to me, based on a couple of wings I have measured. The patterns suggest a mix of primaries (roughly P6-9) and larger secondaries.
However, I do not have the wing of a Red-legged Partridge (which are resident in small numbers near Sandy Haven) to compare; at this time of year they might be slightly more likely?
