I saw this bird yesterday through my telescope and i came to the conclusion it was a Scaup-faced Tufted Duck,due to its small size,small white facial blaze,the extensive black on bill and the pale band behind the bill tip not features you would associate with a true Scaup.In hindsight perhaps the head shape wasn't quite right for a Tufted Duck so could this be an Aythya hybrid?Also like Clive i was more interested in the Long-tailed Duck than the Aythya species it was with so probably didn't pay it the attention it deserved.
