Skylarks have been pretty thin on the ground at the usual sites around Gupton Farm and in the Broomhill Burrows area this autumn, but the last few days I have noticed larks flying over the road between Freshwater West and Angle. Although not the easiest area to watch, I stopped for about 20 minutes at a gate entrance along the main road between Fields A and B on the above photo. There was a lot of Skylark activity and at least one Lapland Bunting with them, but probably several more. Unfortunately the larks spend most of their time on the ground in Field A, which is a stubble undersown with grass, and where the grass is tall enough to make it almost impossible to see birds on the ground. However, the birds also commute to Fields B and C, which are low (and relatively open) root crops, where they can be visible on the ground occasionally. Worth a look if you are passing, though parking isn't easy.
