As we approached Castlemartin Corse for the Webs count this morning we could see a large flock of several hundred Lapwing over the MOD range. The Corse itself was very quiet for this time of year perhaps because water levels are back down and the pools were frozen.
Nevertheless we enjoyed a good few hours in the sun with no wind and saw a good range of birds:-
Curlew 34, Little Egret 2, Snipe 11, Lapwing 194, Teal 85, Mallard 6, Shoveller 27, Wigeon 25, Pintail 1, Little Grebe 5, Moorhen 4, Coot 3, Mute Swan 3, Buzzard 5, Kestrel 1 (sat on Paddy's nestbox pole!).
Behind Freshwater West beach there were some good small bird numbers though difficult to count in mobile flocks - Linnet 600+, Chaffinch 200+, Skylark 150+.
5 Chough were in the dunes, a Merlin flew across the Corse and star bird of the day was a fine adult male Hen Harrier which flew over the reedbed and then quartered the dunes on the north side of the Corse.
