Late afternoon at the Gann
A cold wind blowing in from The Haven this afternoon, made checking the gulls on the beach at low tide eye-watering. After confirming that the Long-billed Dowitcher was still present in its usual spot, a check of the lagoon revealed 6 Goldeneye (3 pairs), a Little Grebe, a Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank. On the river 2 Little Egrets with plumes seemed to be checking each other out. On the beach a single Bar-tailed Godwit, and altogether 10 Redshank and 2 Dunlin. A decent gathering of gulls on the beach at low tide, and I had great fun picking out Mediterranean Gulls one after the other - amounting to 23 in total (17 adults, 3 3CY, 3 2CY). Many of the adults were in, or close to, breeding plumage, and at least 10 seemed to be in pairs within the larger flock of Black-headed and Common Gulls. A lovely way to end the weekend.
