Pencarnan Report

For the 9th consecutive year we are back in residence here at Pencarnan. Our efforts this month have focused as much on Patch Birding as on preventing the pipes from freezing up!

Notable observations for the first half of the month have been the unusual number of Red-throated Divers in Whitesands Bay. Previous Spring counts have shown 1-3 birds passing through. Daily counts this year have been between 4 and 9. Movement has been confirmed by the change in ratio of winter and summer plumage birds within the same day. (9 yesterday. 4 today).

On the 12th we listed our earliest Wheatear and on 14th the earliest Chiffchaff.

Also seen on 14th 100+ Meadow Pipits near Rhosson Farm - the first indication that their migration is now underway.
