A really good morning, not masses of birds but always something happening. The bird of the day was present at Llanferran Pool first thing: a bright male Blue-headed Wagtail. I managed some record shots before it flew over the road and out of sight, I looked later but no luck. There were few birds passing over but a couple of Redpolls sp were noteable (not many here this spring so far). There were a couple of Willow Warblers and Sedge Warblers new in along with about 6 Blackcaps. In Porth Melgan Withies there was a Spotted Flycatcher and a Pied Flycatcher. As the record shot below shows it had apparently lost a lot of crown feathers; the bleached brown primaries suggest a 2nd Cal Yr bird. Frustratingly, a Ringtail Harrier flew over Carn Llidi, allowing only brief, high views. Didn't seem particularly slim-winged but it's late for a Hen. Don't know. A minute later a Red Kite appeared and was much more accommodating, another, later, and a couple of White Wagtails near the Golf Course, finished things off nicely. A good day!
A check of records of Blue-headed Wagtail this century reveals that it has become a very rare visitor to Pembs, though we've done well with three? this Spring. I'm doing a note for the Birdnotes blog but don't have the Pembs 2006 & 2008 reports. Does anyone have spare copies I can purchase please?
