John’s Starling observation was stimulating. I recorded similar
departures of 60 birds on the 7th July 1994 at Strumble Head and in 1997 saw 34
depart on the 15th June and 60 on the 6th July. These observations were post “Donovan
& Rees” going to the printer but the 1994 record did warrant a mention in
the Pembrokeshire Bird Report for that year.
My presence at Strumble was erratic in June and July thereafter so did
not establish whether this was a regular event but following John’s observation
wonder whether it has been going on year after year. Like John I wondered
whether birds from beyond the county were involved and thought it likely
because of the number involved compared to the small number that breed here.
The Starling being among the first birds to depart Pembrokeshire post
breeding is an original suggestion. I’ll join the supporters club if John will
let me.
