From Rob Davies - This big female Peregrine was picked up out of the sea off Ramsey Island late last summer by Ffion Rees. She couldn’t fly and ditched in the sea a second time after washing and release. She had a strange feather condition - many of her flight feathers especially the inner secondaries and tertials had apparently decomposed. We don’t know what from and even the vets were baffled. It wasn’t a fulmar fouling. With DEFRA permit we have moulted her out and Ffion has given her fitness training prior to release near Solva last Saturday. She had a nice big pigeon to send her on her way but if she is unsuccessful in hunting she may become hungry and perhaps approachable (although she is quite wild) over the next weeks. We removed the flying jesses but she will remain identifiable from her plumage over the next month or two, on a good photo: outer tail feathers and inner secondaries still straggly and she is missing a primary, third in from outermost, on her right wing. It would be great to get any re-sightings of her and to know if her rehabilitation is successful. She may have headed straight back to Ramsey but we don’t really know where she came from originally. Please get in touch with me (rag@rookwoodstudios.co.uk) if you think you see her.
Thanks
Rob Davies
