Waterfowl counts late this afternoon (16:00 hrs to 17:30 hrs) in the Carew/Cresswell complex produced some quite reasonable numbers of roosting birds:
Curlew 152, whimbrel 15, redshank 99, greenshank 12 and 14 little egrets.
They were made more easy to see when flushed from cover by a hunting osprey that was initially fishing over Carew River between 16:45 and 17:00 hrs. It then switched its attentions to the Cresswell River before, having briefly landed in a tree on the edge of West Williamston nature reserve. However, it too was disturbed by a small flotilla of craft heading up to Cresswell Quay - there was a lot of boating traffic there today.
I wonder if the two people walking the shore at West Williamston had any idea that there was an osprey flying more or less over them. I had to make do with a distant view from near Black Mixen, hence the small image.
It circled around for a while getting gradually higher; then appeared to be heading east (generally in the direction of Carmarthen Bay) when it was lost from view. Presumably a different bird to the one at the Gann?
