Picton Point Swallows
Jean and I visited Picton Point at about 1900hrs. There were 37 curlew, several redshank, some teal, mallard and oystercatchers. Several hundred black-headed gulls came down the river to roost on the mud and at around 1930hrs 94 Canada geese flew in. But the most spectacular sight was that of swallows on our arrival, they were both low over the water and on up to a considerable height and there were thousands of them. They were, as Jean said, as dense as midges. They were passing downstream for about ten minutes before petering out to a steady trickle of a few dozen at a time. This went on until about 2000hrs.
