Amroth 15th Nov - Pomarine Skua

Last night Maria Evans, from Amroth, telephoned to say that she was caring for a Skua that had been handed to her yesterday. It had been found on Amroth beach by someone dog-walking. It was clearly weak and was reported to have been standing over the corpse of another skua! Presumably a victim of the recent storms?

We went to see it today to take some photos and some biometric measurements. We were able to confirm that it was a fine Pomarine Skua (possibly a male based on wing measurements). Its tail was quite tatty and no spoons of course. All being well it will be released back into the wild in a day or two to continue its migration.

Earlier in the day there were reasonable numbers of redshank (130+) and greenshanks (8) along the Carew/Cresswell complex and Cosheston Pill (both places combined). A single ruff was feeding with redshank at Cosheston Pill. Lapwing numbers have increased too - in excess of 400 (280 on the Cresswell River).
