Starling spectacular

Move over Slebech....I watched from the N side of Castlemartin Corse from around 1530 this evening  (better views up the valley though further from the action at Starman's Hall on the opposite side). I could hear a lot of starling chatter on the S side with small groups arriving and overflying the reedbed as on Saturday. They started to arrive in their tens of thousands from up the valley just before 1600, making at first for the bare ground in the brassica field where the cattle are strip grazing. They turned the ground from brown to black - every so often they took off and the black tide receded and swept in again. After 1600, large groups headed for the reedbed, while it was clear tens of thousands more were still coming in and dropping straight into the reedbed further east, with murmurations performing above it. More murmurations above the skyline on the south side. I'd guess order of magnitude 100-150,000, possibly higher.

I aim to watch from Starman's Hall tomorrow - if anyone is not sure where to go I'll be in the main Freshwater West car park around 1545, and will talk to my former colleagues about some proper viewing arrangements!

Also present one Cetti's (N side opp. Starman's Hall), 400 lapwing, all the usual reedbed noises.
