After a trip to Amroth yesterday I was surprised to pick out a
Red-necked Grebe. I noted the thick neck and stocky appearance, as well as the dusky neck and dark head with greyish cheeks, but the light was fading so the yellow base to the bill wasn't evident. It was preening on its own but it wasn't too far away from a Great Crested Grebe so I could compare the differences. It later flew showing clearly less white in the wings compared to a Great Crested.
