Osprey and Med Gulls
From Peter Howe, an Osprey on the Cleddau this afternoon, at Minwear. And from Andrew Sims 2 Mediterranean Gulls north of Shag Rock, Broadhaven, one with a green colour-ring on its right leg.
Lesser Whitethroat at the Gann
Couldn`t resist another look this evening with all the waders about, as soon as I got out of the car this bird flew in front of me & landed in a bush a few metres away, haven`t seen one properly for yonks, let alone get a photo.
Wader wise much the same as this morning, very little at first but as the sun set & the tide crept higher, numbers increased, with the addition of two Black Tailed Godwits.
Garganey - Marloes Mere
A juvenile Garganey at Marloes Mere this evening, 60 Mallard and 10 Teal, all very jittery (probably a fox). Earlier at St Ann's, 12 Pied wagtails and a Kestrel at Kete. Gann: 50 small waders mostly Ringed Plover and Dunlin with 2 Sanderling. 8 Turnstones, 2 Knot, 4 Redshank, 2 Common Sandpipers and a Greenshank. Large flock of BH Gulls dip feeding and about 500 large gulls loafing around. 150 Oystercatchers. This morning Dale airfield: 2 Snipe, a Curlew and a Ringed plover. Young Kestrel on runway eating a vole. 12 Wheatear. Flock of 50 Goldfinch on track up.
West Angle
An interesting 30 minutes on the high tide at West Angle this morning with a 2CY Little Gull and 2 Mediterranean Gulls (2CY and Ad) sat on the sea with the Black-headed Gulls and a Black-tailed Godwit on the shore. Sadly, all of the gulls were disturbed by a young Peregrine chasing a feral pigeon.
The Gann
A mini Wader fest, 4 Knot, 10 Turnstones, 4+ Sanderling (inc a couple of juvs) 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Greenshank, 4 Redshank & a small Dunlin / Ringed Plover flock. Difficult to count sometimes as they were moving to & fro along the shoreline between the sandy beach & the lagoon inlet. A fabulous morning with a big spring tide, bodes well for tomorrow morning.

Teifi
A Green Sandpiper the best on the marsh this evening. A look at Patch in the rain found 1 Sanderling, 6 Dunlin, 1 Turnstone, and 14 Ringed Plover.
Spotted Flycather, Lesser Whitethroat and Lesser Redpoll were notable birds this morning along with double figures of Blackcap and Chiffchaff, caught during our final Constant Effort Site ringing session of 2015. See "CES 12 ends with variety" for more ....
Yesterday, due to high tides, I ended up taking one of our trips from St. Dogmael's Quay, a close inspection of the roosting herons found 8 Little Egrets.

Marsh Harrier
Still at Marloes Mere this morning, on the far side as always - sitting on top of a bush waiting for his chance to pounce - c12 Snipe flying around, made restless by it`s presence.

Marloes Mere
The dark juv Marsh Harrier still present, frustratingly over the Trehill side & thinking of frustration, while I was watching the Harrier, 3 Waders flew over & away (Skomer bound?) from me - all I got was a this pic. For what it`s worth, the right hand bird was a tad smaller than the other two!
Little Stint, waders, and Dolphins.
Newport this morning -
The juvenile Little Stint with c80 small waders.
(Karen)
Teifi from Patch but mobile,
One Turnstone, 20 Ringed Plover, 6 Dunlin, 9 Sanderling, and a Redshank calling.
The most amazing sighting was two Bottlenosed Dolphins up river of Patch / Webley Hotel.
Talking to other staff from Bay to Remember and local commercial fishermen (47 years knowledge) this would appear to be the first time the Bn Dolphins have entered the river past the neck at Patch - hopefully they have got out by now. Grey Seals have been up river as far as Cenarth.

Marsh Harrier and Quail
Andrew Sims saw a dark juvenile Marsh Harrier at Marloes Mere this afternoon as well as a similar selection of birds to Brian at The Gann. Mark Waldron reports a Quail calling yesterday morning at Nolton Cross Caravan and Camp Site.
Gann, St Ann's and Marloes Mere
Pickleridge Pools (post Derek): 4 Redshank, 3 Greenshank, 3 Knot, 2 Common Sandpiper, 3 Teal and a Little Grebe. 2 Little egret up on flooded marsh. St Ann's/Kete: Pied wagtails up to 25 in the last field, a Wheatear and a Kestrel. Some promising-looking fields but nothing I could see in them. Lots of Gannet activity off the lighthouse so had a sea watch but only Gannets. Airfield will have to wait for another day. Quick look from both hides at Marloes Mere: 80 Mallard, 10 Teal and a Snipe.
Gann
A quick look this afternoon - 4 Turnstones, 1 juv Ringed Plover, 1 juv Dunlin, 1 Greenshank, 4 Redshank. Met Brian en-route to Dale Airfield who was off to find some exotica.
Westfield Pill.
A Hobby this afternoon,is our second for the year, following one on 7th May.A Garden Warbler a fortnight ago,was the first I have seen in this location for thirty one years.Med Gulls are being seen regularly, both here, and at Llanstadwell.Spotted Flycatchers have been more numerous, and the Reed Warblers have had a very productive breeding season.

Teifi - Coot etc...
-- Reminds me of the Coot we saw sitting on the end of a raft of Manx Shearwaters, 2 km southwest of Grassholm on the 21st August 2002.
14 Redshank opposite the Quay today was good, and c15 Teal with 50+ Mallard shows the ducks are returning.
Swallow numbers roosting are well down this year, often not reaching more than 100 per night.
This a fat juvenile Sedge Warbler, 17.5g this morning, was 10.8g nine days ago.
Sedge Warbler passage is poor too, this supports several other reporting sites (eg Mark Grantham in Cornwall) and surely the increased percentage of adults indicates a poor breeding season...
(Rich D and Wendy J)
Green Sandpiper etc
Green Sandpiper on the newly reshaped garden pond today along with Kingfisher. While work was in progress an otter started hunting, 10 metres from a working 13 ton digger. Hardly shy this one!
Newport am
My best ever view of a flying Green Sandpiper looking down from the raised path on the N side. By the boat club c20 ea Dunlin & Ringed Plover, 4 Knot & a Sanderling.
West Williamston NR- white gull
Walking around West Williamston NR yesterday afternoon I was suprised to find a white gull in a large gull flock. It looked very much like an Iceland gull but it was more likely a leucitic Lesser Black or Herring gull. Also present on the river were 4 Whimbrel, 2 Greenshank and a Barwit.
Monday, 24 August 2015

As yesterday plus a Sandwich Tern preening with the gulls, 2 Knot & 3 of the local colour ringed Herring Gulls.
Skomer
A wader flew over Skomer heading NE this morning calling 'chu it' but I didn't get a good look at it (bum end of it flying away). Maybe a Spotted Redshank or possibly something rarer. I thought I'd let people know in case anyone was near the Gann or Marloes Mere or something and fancied a look. Also Tree Pipit, a few Spotted Flycatchers and a spattering of warblers.
Angle Bay
During my lunchtime visit to walk the dog, driving down the Roscrowther road just before the turning down to the bay (on top of the hill) there was a flock of 50 - 60 small birds mostly linnets but a few greenfinches and chaffinches on the hedges and in the crop field behind the hedge also on the wires.

Iceland Gull Newport
A 2CY Iceland Gull with the big flock of large gulls this afternoon. I assume it's the same bird as 2 weeks ago as it has a metal ring on it's R leg, as that one did.
Also the 2 Greenshanks still there & the first Little Egret for c 6 weeks.

Mostly Herring gulls but all put up by a dog walker before I could complete my scan! Quick look at the mere: Bumped into Derek like me hoping for a Marsh Harrier, but only c50 Mallard and dozen Teal. 2 Kestrel and female Sparrowhawk.
Skokholm
Didn't have time to post yesterday as we went out ringing Storm Petrels (another 30 or so ringed, five retraps and a control from elsewhere). Yesterday saw the first Tree Pipit and Yellow Wagtail of the autumn (both early dates). Still plenty of waders. Today a bit of a wash out so far but a little fall of Willow Warblers.
Tuesday, 18 August 2015
Skomer
One of yesterdays 2 juv Ruffs remain today, while a Ringed Plover flew over this morning. A slight hirundine passage included 9 House Martins and 3 Sand Martins, while passerine migrants were represented by 5 Robins, yesterdays lingering Firecrest, 2 Pied Flycatchers and 3 Spotted Flycatchers.

Where do they go?
Herring Gull Blue 496, at Newport yesterday, was ringed as a youngster at Gloucester landfill in Oct 2006, was seen at Newport (by Richard Dobbins) in Sept 08, back in Gloucs in Jan 09, then disappeared till yesterday - 6 1/2 years.
Marsh Harrier
From Gary Manning - One flew over the car between the bluestone entrance and caneston wood this afternoon at about 2.45. Female/juv bird.
Marloes Mere
Fairly quiet, 10 Snipe buzzing around, 5 Plover high & distant, I could just about hear a faint "peep" - Greys maybe?
Wednesday, 12 August 2015
Marloes & Gann
From Andrew Sims - The Marsh Harrier was still at Marloes Mere at lunchtime, feeding
successfully then sitting on the same bush as in Derek’s photo, finally
around 3pm leaving towards the east then south towards Skokholm. There
were also some Wood Sandpiper-like calls, but the bird was not seen. An
increasing variety of waders was at the Gann lagoon at high tide this
evening – ruff, sanderling, 3 ringed plovers with 6 dunlin, a green
sandpiper, 5 redshanks and a few curlew passing over.
Skokholm
Every day a belter at the moment. Sooty Shearwater and Marsh Harrier highlights today, but also a nice selection of waders and nearly 100 Willow Warbler.
Skomer
2 Wood Sandpipers briefly on North Pond last night, also a Spotted Flycatcher and at least 15 Willow Warblers. A Sunfish was in North Haven at lunch time. A Dunlin flew over Martin's Haven this morning heading towards Skomer.
Newport
An earlier walk along the river path found 2 Common Sandpipers, 1 Dunlin, 2 Greenshank,
1 Kingfisher, a juv Peregrine was sitting on the saltmarsh and 2 Greylag Geese flew in from the estuary @ 07.40 but decided they didn't want to join the small Newport Canada flock and carried on flying towards Cardigan.

Skokholm
It really feels like autumn now. Over 40 Willow Warbler again logged along with a nice variety of waders and other common migrants (totals on Skok blog). A Basking Shark off the Lighthouse was the first that we have seen here.
Angle
From Chris Wiltshier Yesterday at Angle harbour there were 9 Med gulls on the spit with 1 colour ringed ( green RP42). (N.B.Grateful if anyone can track down where this gull is from) Also seen 1 Whimbrel, 2 juvenile Ringed Plover, 1 Grey heron and 2 Ravens flying over calling.

Four Green Sandpipers - Teifi
A minimum of four Green Sandpipers around Mallard pond tonight. Swifts still present and c150 Swallows came in to roost. Six Teal at Creek hide yesterday appear to be the first back.
Common Sandpipers are around the estuary in small numbers - from the cliffs under the Cliff Hotel to the river on the reserve. Other waders in very small numbers, Whimbrel, Dunlin, Sanderling, Ringed Plover and Redshank.
500 Canada Geese are off the Railings, with one Bar-headed Goose and 27 moulting Mute Swans. The Cardigan Island Barnacle Goose flock is currently c70 birds. Five Sandwich Terns were feeding in the mouth of the river.

Ringed Gulls at Newport
Black headed gull 24A2, Ringed as a nestling in Gloucestershire in June 2013 has now been at Newport since June 30 with 5 subsequent sightings. This is the first ringed BH that I know of that's stayed around rather than just passed through.
Herring gull orange W3FT here today was also here on April 18 having been ringed at Pitsea landfill site in Essex in Dec 2013.
An uncanny similarity of dates with the 2CY Iceland, at Newport on April 18 & Aug 7.

Marloes and Gann
As Derek reports the Marsh Harrier (juv) was mostly keeping distant and preferred flicking up and down the hedgerows and surrounding fields. It dropped onto the mere and struggled trying to lift a prey item up before eventually letting go? From time to time it sat in among the vegetation, just its orange crown visible. At one stage it flew from the barb-wire gate directly up and over the Oriole Hide I was in! Didn't notice many ducks tonight, but it did put up 7 Snipe and a Dunlin(?).
Gann: Last light. 2 GBB gulls with Skokholm rings (Rich and Giselle, light was poor but possibly W:031 and W:072). Also a Whimbrel with rings (Yellow above Green). 20 Ringed plover, 20 Dunlin, 2 Common Sandpipers, 6 Whimbrel and a Kingfisher by Crabhall.

Radford Pill to Carew Mill
A group of 5 greenshank today, plus 2 each redshank, curlew and little egret.
A late surge of young birds in the garden recently - chaffinch, greenfinch, house sparrow, bullfinch, blue and great tit, nuthatch, and (nearby) something which the Birdtrack software considered unusual, 4 spotted flycatchchers together - presumably a family group, flycatching and chasing about from branches and wires..

Marloes Mere
2 Kestrels hovering over the cliff edge, looked like two females - 1 adult & 1 juvenile?
Marsh Harrier still present, with the most vivid yellow head & throat. I sat in the hide watching it for an hour as it patrolled the hedges close to the Martins Haven road, eventually I decided to drive over & get a closer look at this fine specimen but it saw me first & flew straight down towards the hide.
Hope you had some excellent views Brian......

Hot on Dereks heels...
... I heard the plover going over but couldn't get on it 6.15. The Marsh Harrier continued to cover the mere until 7.45, putting up a surprising number of duck c80 I could just pick out the male Tuftie and half a dozen Teal otherwise all Mallard, some of the duck dropped into the field by Trehill Farm, no snipe or any other waders as far as I could see tonight.
Marloes Mere.... getting better!
Marsh Harrier (f/j) carrying a tiny rabbit & a Grey Plover flew over the YHA towards the Mere as I left, looking really smart in the sunshine with it`s contrasting black belly & silver /white wings.
Marloes and Gann (last night)
Marloes: Green Sandpiper repeatedly tried to settle out from Britton Hide but bathing gulls appeared to spook it. A probable Wood Sandpiper chiff-iff-iffing towards eastern end at 7.30pm but not seen. 4 Snipe.
Gann: 50 Curlew, 6 Whimbrel, 10 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover, 2 Redshank, Greenshank and a Common Sandpiper. 4 Little egret and a Little grebe. c100 Oystercatchers.

Iceland Gull - Newport
What I assume (being no expert) is a 2CY Iceland Gull with the loafing Herring Gulls by the bridge this morning. It has a metal ring on it's R leg.
Marloes and Gann last night
Marloes: 54 Mallard, the pair of Tufties and 8 Snipe. Spent a while watching a female Sparrowhawk 'boomerang' around the seeded field towards Martins Haven where there's been quite a flock of finches, buntings and pipits, each time returning to its lookout post. Willow warblers out from Britton Hide.
Gann: 70 BH Gulls, 7+ Common Sandpipers (had 7 in view in a little group with others calling behind me), 20 Ringed Plover, 2 Sanderling, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Dunlin and a Greenshank.

Common Scoter flock - Teifi
Wader, hirundine and warbler visible migration around the Teifi appears slow, but small numbers of Common Scoter are passing the estuary every morning.
10:35 this morning, a flock in usual line formation came over the Poppit dunes along the estuary and out west past Cemaes Head. The flock of c45 birds presumably had migrated overland and followed the Teifi Valley to the sea, rather than a river going south into Carmarthen Bay ie The River Towy?
This seems more likely than a large flock heading up river and u-turning on seeing Cardigan Town ?

Recent sightings
From Sean Murphy Plas Dwbl, Mynachlogddu Pair of Quail flushed whilst mowing one of his fields last Thursday.
I followed up Richards info about the colour-ringed whimbrel project. Great to see a picture of Whimbrel C51 with its newly fitted 'bling' that was at the Gann a couple of weeks back. http://pembsringinggroup.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/whimbrel-migration.html

Whimbrel - D99 at The Gann
Brian, thanks for the sighting and details posted below;-
This Whimbrel was ringed at The Gann in the Spring, on 22nd May 2015. (Paul W/Pembs RG)
Nice to prove the site faithfulness of individual birds on migration, to complement our knowledge of breeding and wintering locations.

Marloes: 2 Snipe, a Shoveler calling and about 30 Mallard. A few Sand Martins this evening. Gann: Another Whimbrel with colour rings - D99 black on yellow right, green ring on left. Richard, might this be connected to the same scheme as the previous bird? Also 20 Dunlin, 12 Ringed plover, a Sanderling, a Turnstone, a Redshank and a Common Sandpiper. c30 Curlews headed up towards Dale airfield as tide increased.
Teifi - waders
From the Webley this lunchtime, 3 Turnstone, 2 Ringed Plover, 1 Sanderling and 1 Dunlin.

The Gann
From Francis Daunt - Nice diversity of waders in beautiful evening light an hour before
high: 106 oyc, c30 dunlin, c20 ringed plover, 9 curlew, 3 whimbrel, 3
common sand, 2 redshank, also 1 little egret, 3 shelduck. Dozens of
swallows feeding over the Pill.
Marloes Mere
A brief view (all of three seconds) of a small to medium wader - uniform light brown above, whitish undersides, small white rump, flew / blown in the strong breeze into the Mere, in the Britton hide area. What came instantly came to mind was Wood Sandpiper....mmm. I alerted Brian who sometimes lurks in the vegetation there to have a "butchers" but the windy conditions won`t help much.

Teifi Marshes
Green Sandpiper around the marsh during the last two days, may prefer the mud at Otter hide at the moment with these high tides. One calling Whimbrel over Mallard pond today was a surprise, though some Curlew are roosting on the marsh.
Early morning ringing during the last four days has produced 44 Sedge and 62 Reed Warblers, though through ageing, fat scores and retraps this suggests acro migration is not yet underway.

Cwmwdig Farm, Berea
From Dafydd and Heather Richards - Green sandpiper at pool at Cwmwdig farm on 1st August. Also, Sedge Warbler still feeding nestlings.
Newport
From John Ramm - At 4.00 p.m. today there were two greenshanks clearly visible from
Newport bridge as were a pair of kingfishers. For birders who love to
see kingfishers there will rarely be a better opportunity to see them so
easily. Early evening on Poppit Sands there were 4 dunlins probing
close to the samphire banks at high tide.
