Hen Harrier

A ring-tail near Mynachlog Ddu this morning, hunting over rough grassland.

At least a dozen short-tailed voles were seen scurrying away during a short walk, implying that the vole population is going through a peak phase. Observers in north and east Wales reported high vole numbers much earlier in the year, along with above-average brood sizes for both kestrel and barn owl. In Pembrokeshire, we recorded poor breeding productivity with these species this year, suggesting that the vole population peaks and troughs can vary over relatively short distances.
