Whilst out setting up moth traps with Paul Culyer, we noted at least four kestrels hunting (two in range west, two in range east), this being possibly the start of a small influx of dispersing kestrels which often build-up here at this time of year.
We had very good views of an immature female marsh harrier hunting near the coast near Linney Head - possibly the bird that has been seen recently at Castlemartin Corse.
Flocks of finches were fairly sparse in range west, but in range east we noted separate flocks in excess of a hundred each of linnets and goldfinches.
We also looked for flocks of choughs that might be roosting on the coast. Numbers were disappointing though - mainly pairs near their expected nest sites. But there was a small flock of eight feeding on the cliffs above Bullslaughter Bay. These might have included some immatures.
On the way home, we saw a barn owl perched in a tree on a roadside near Martletwy - we haven't seen one around here for a while, although they do breed locally.
