A look at various roost locations along on the Carew/Creswell system produced fairly low numbers of waterfowl yesterday (i.e. less than 100 teal, only a few wigeon and two adult shelducks (often there are none present at this time of year, most having dispersed by late summer to their moulting grounds).
There were however 17 little egrets roosting in the salt-marsh at one location along-side small numbers of mixed gulls and a few black-tailed godwits. Three greenshanks were found roosting but very few redshanks were obvious at expected locations.
Over at the Pembroke upper millpond not less than 60 black-tailed godwits were roosting in the freshwater shallows. They were difficult to view here but their numbers seemed fairly typical for the time of year. A few more were feeding in the Pembroke River channel below the Castle pond. WeBs counts will probably reveal more.
Three still quite fluffy unfledged (second brood?) juv. little grebes were being fed small fish in the middle pond.
Today a sanderling (more often seen nearer the coast) was roosting at Beggars Reach near Codcanlas with several ringed plovers.
