Landshipping Quay this afternoon

In between the showers, at a blustery Landshipping Quay this afternoon, we noted a typical variety of waders and ducks, mainly teal and redshank. At least 3 greenshanks were feeding in Millar’s Park creek. A passing adult male sparrowhawk over the Quay shore didn’t bother the ducks or the waders at all.

The young drake teal were in various states of plumage. The one above on the left (probably one we photographed without realising it the other day) has a broader than usual cream facial crescent scar/stripe. There seemed to be considerable variation in the facial patterns of the still moulting juvenile birds.

Over to the west, at Sprinkle Pill, we could see at least 30 wigeon, 116 greylag geese and c.100 adult LBB gulls resting on the shore. Black-tailed godwit numbers seemed lower than a couple of days ago (perhaps no more than 15 or so) but our view from the Landshipping-side was rather distant.

A great-crested grebe was feeding mid-channel – one or two often seem to frequent the upper Daugleddau zone at this time of year.
