Great Northern Divers off Bluckspool/Frainslake, Castlemartin

Despite the rain, in desperation for some exercise and fresh air, we decided to have a look at the Frainslake and Bluckspool bays at Castlemartin to do a late afternoon belated WeBs count. Usual expected species included a small flock of curlew, c.50 oycs, 80+ dunlin, 18 ringed plovers and 20 grey plovers roosting on Frainslake beach.

There was very little at Bluckspool beach but two very smart adult great northern divers were just offshore. Both were still in full summer/breeding plumage which was slightly surprising. Unfortunately it was drizzling at the time and too dark for a decent photo record. A pity too, as they were feeding very close to the shore. Hopefully they will stay around the Freshwater West area for a while.
