Martin’s Haven & environs

We had an alba Wagtail masterclass whilst sat by one of the newly-ploughed fields at West Hook Farm. Over a dozen wagtails, mixed Pied and White and all super-smart, fed steadily, moving to within 10 yards of us. Probably the best views I have ever had of White Wagtails, and really fascinating comparing all the plumages with the Collins Guide.

Elsewhere, the best of the birding was in any shelter from the wind: mixed Willow Warblers and Chiffchaffs in the gorse, and a Swallow overhead, going West.

The nicest surprise was a lone Whimbrel feeding in the westernmost field of West Hook Farm. Remarkably confiding (for a Whimbrel): great views of the head pattern etc.

Non-birds: half a dozen Red Admirals amongst the Peacocks today. A Common Lizard basking in the hedgerow by Lockley Lodge, and an Adder basking in one of the regular spots.
