We had another big flock of hirundines over the valley yesterday afternoon: probably equal numbers of Swallows and Sand Martins, and half as many House Martins. All flying very low in the 25kts winds, so we got some stunning views as they picked off the bibio flies that were swarming.
And, in amongst them, five Swifts! Some of the best views I have ever had, as they turned, stalled and almost hovered in the wind.
Later, in roadside scrub near East Hook Farm, a singing Lesser Whitethroat. Doesn’t make it onto the GLL, clearly, but not a bird we get down here most years, so a real treat.
