Martin’s Haven: warblers and raptors

The wind turned Easterly overnight, died right down, and we had some rain: perfect for migrants here.

Not large numbers, but by mid-morning we had Willow Warblers, Whitethroats, and at least two Sedge Warblers all singing in the valley. Also probably two birds that I took to be Blackcaps in sub-song, but turned out to be Garden Warblers: I have never seen one here before! Including a couple of Chiffchaffs, 6 species in all.

Our first Spotted Flycatcher of the year was perched on the railings of Lockley Lodge. And then a Buzzard came low overhead followed by a female Marsh Harrier heading East.  And a strikingly-coloured male Merlin chasing something rather noisily over Deadman’s Bay.

Finally, good news about the resident Swallows, which have lost their nest sites with the toilets currently being shut. Mark and Kate at the Skomer MCZ kindly opened up the “Swallow hatch” into the display centre, and it is clearly being used!
