The Gann

Yesterday evening we popped over to the Gann for a sheltered walk (yes, it really was...).

Good to see Dave and Lisa out on their run, and our thanks for their tip-off about a flock of small waders towards the end of the ridge.

After several groups flew in and around, this numbered 30-40 birds, split pretty evenly Ringed Plover and Dunlin, as well as two Turnstones. But best of all were the 6 Sanderling, four of which were in full summer plumage. Rather surprisingly, I realised that I had only ever seen Sanderling in winter plumage before: these birds were absolutely stunning, with brick red heads and upper breasts.

On the pools, 2 pairs of Shelduck and a single Greenshank, as well as the usual Oystercatchers and Cormorants.
