Dinas Island & Afon Gwaun yesterday evening

Yesterday evening we made another attempt to see the Dinas Island colour-ringed chough. No such luck though, the pair roosted in a section of cliff with no access anywhere near to get good views. We did see (another?) whinchat though near the coast path between Dinas Head and Pwllgwaelod. One seen earlier on Friday evening was at Dinas Head.

Lots of meadow pipits up there - must have been in excess of 50. As we passed inaccessible steep bracken slopes on Dinas Island we wondered just how often some interesting migrants must be lurking there but unlikely to be seen!

We had a quick look at the Afon Gwaun near Fishguard where a male dipper (singing softly in sub-song) was watched for some time as it perched upstream of the weir. It was ringed too, but we could not see the ring number - perhaps one ringed by Paddy or Mike?

By the way David, the green cricket taken by the kestrel looks most likely to have been a female great green bush cricket - the long ovipositor is visible sticking out from its talons. This is the largest bush cricket we have in Pembs - a grassland species restricted mostly to the southern half of the county.
