Up North for a change this afternoon

Having been working inside all morning, we decided to make a rare (for us) visit up to Teifi Marshes to have a closer look at the Ring-necked Duck. Our previous views of individuals at various locations in Pembs and elsewhere over the years having been mostly rather distant ones. Coffee and cake at the reserve centre also provided a reasonable excuse to go somewhere where we hoped it had stopped raining.

The duck was still on the Ceredigon-side, but we had excellent close views of it anyway from the Mallard Hide - how long will it stay we wondered?

On the Pembs-side we had brief views of a Kingfisher, heard a close by Cettis Warbler (one of two heard, the other being in Ceredigion). There were usual expected species - Little Grebes (a dozen or more), Grey Herons (several), Mallards, Teal, Water Rails, Curlew etc. It was also nice just to sit in the Curlew hide and watch 2 Goosanders (red-heads) diving for flat fish which they seemed to catch with reasonable ease.

A pleasant sunny Sunday afternoon, surprisingly few people around and the blackberry and apple flapjack at the centre cafe was excellent!
