Misc. winter flocking/roosting birds

Flocks of dispersing woodpigeons are quite regular at this time of year. We've noted flocks of 100 or more in a few places in recent weeks. Around 2-300 were probably heading to a roost somewhere near Cosheston just before sunset this evening.

At around dusk we noted c.70 greylags flying over Carew roundabout from the Carew Newton area towards Carew River. They were most likely heading over to the Daugleddau to roost where numbers usually build up at this time of year.

Noting Richard Harris's interesting posting about magpies roosting at Nolton Haven, Donovan and Rees in Birds of Pembrokeshire (1994) provided the following summary about winter roosts:

Lockley (1957) stated that winter roosts of 100 were common. In modern times 50-60 has been more normal, though up to 80 have been recorded at Goodwick and 112 at Plumstone.

Since 1994, autumn/winter double-figure counts of magpies have occasionally been reported in annual Pembrokeshire Bird Reports, including roosts-counts on Skomer and Dowrog, and other counts at Castlemartin Corse, Haverfordwest, and Teifi Marshes. However, 54 recently at Nolton Haven appears to be the largest count reported so far since 50 at Dowrog on 17th February 1999 and 50 at Teifi Marshes on 11th October 2019.
