Mullock on the Dale Road

After last weeks fall of blackcaps (43 ringed in 2 days - 12-13th April), we now have singing males setting up territories, into that mix are lesser (3) and common whitethroats (4) singing too.

A jay, nesting in a hawthorn tree calls variously like a heron and this morning like a duck!! They are renowned mimics but Xeno canto only has jays mimicing birds of prey (so far ..... the numbers of records are in their thousands). Nottingham university were doing a research project on feather mites and the Jays had the biggest load of all bird species.

Swallows passing over in small numbers-great to hear their songs on the air again.

Whimbrel (1's and 2's) calling each time the tide pushes them off the Gann estuary where I guess they are feeding en route North.
