Great White Egret, Westfield Pill, Wednesday

The Great White Egret was still there yesterday afternoon on the mud by the northeast reedbed. Walkers disturbed it and it flew off south towards the marina and haven.

It seemed that there were chicks everywhere, in the bushes and woods and on the water. Some parents were keeping close to the youngsters, but some chicks were off on risky adventures - one small duckling crossed the pill alone and swam around a Grey Heron, which fortunately ignored it. The young Grey Herons were making a racket in the trees, but the local, currently successful, Mute Swan family were snoozing in the sunshine, six cygnets at present.
