Preseli Hills & The Gann

The highlight of a day out yesterday in the Preselis searching for tricky species in new or irregularly checked locations was a cracking male Whinchat close to Rosebush.  Also 3 Tree Pipit nearby and a singing Cuckoo further east towards Mynachlogddu.

At the Gann the late pulse of small waders continues, with 11 Sanderling, 23 Dunlin and 8 Ringed Plover this morning on the beach after high tide.  The 2CY Med Gull continues (with Black-headed Gull numbers increasing, peak so far has been 19).  Sadly the Shelduck brood is now down to 2.

The colour-ringed Dunlin at the Gann from 28th-30th May was tracked down to a northern Spanish scheme (the Villaviciosa Estuary).  The colour combination proved it was ringed in 2018, but the fact we were able to make out the last 2 digits of the metal ringed identified it as an individual ringed on 9th September that year.  Birds ringed at the site have been recorded from Iceland to Portugal, but this is the first bird identified as an individual since ringing.
