Still two ospreys present. A red kite was circling over the tiny car park as I arrived. As I reached the shore I saw one of the ospreys which had caught a large fish only moments beforehand, just upstream on the far side. It flew along the trees looking for a perch, settling in a tall ash tree - if I hadn't seen it land, I'd never have picked it up.
I watched it eat for 10-15 minutes. A kayak was paddling downstream against the tide, hugging the bank: sure enough, as it came within 20 metres of the tree it spooked the osprey which flew off with its fish. Pale green "TARPON" canoe, full field notes on occupant available in case he's reading this and wants to confirm it was him. He seemed oblivious. The osprey flew high over the trees, disappearing behind them presumably to a quieter perch to finish its meal.
The other osprey was once again on a (different) post up the Cresswell River: it too was eating some remains. Once again, record shot taken from a distance.
