Fairly quiet at the Gann the past few days, but there has been good numbers of gulls: a mix of local breeders (as evidenced by the colour-ringed Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls from both Skokholm and Skomer), as well as gulls on the move.
Common Gulls are starting to thin out a bit, but the numbers of Black-headed have increased, as they make their way gradually north to their breeding grounds. As is pretty usual for March, the number of Mediterranean Gulls has also increased. During the middle of the day I have had 25+ in recent days (mostly up the river above the footbridge), and the proportion of younger birds has increased too (both 2CY and 3CY). What I wasn't expecting was to count at least 89 Meds this evening in the roost, which formed off the Gann rather than across the bay in Dale. One of the best counts I have ever had here, and I suspect 100+ were present (I left before dusk).
Not the best photo, but a nice illustration of several features separating adult Black-headed Gull (left) from adult Mediterranean Gull (right) |
