A pink-footed goose over St Govan's and wagtails at Withybush

We visited the eastern part of Castlemartin Range again this morning. Winter thrushes were more evident than yesterday. They included 400+ redwings, 100+ fieldfares and similar numbers of blackbirds and song thrushes. Three chiffchaffs were feeding in one patch of blackthorn scrub, one was quite a good candidate for a Siberian subspecies (based on plumage colour and call).

A minimum of 14 choughs observed along the coast were mainly pairs in their breeding territories. The Range grasslands can support hundreds of golden plovers, but only 8 were seen today, and no lapwings.

A surprise was a single pink-footed goose that flew in from the sea over St Govan's Chapel, crossing the car park, heading in a NE direction at lunch-time. Perhaps it dropped in somewhere at Bosherston?

Later in the day we watched pied wagtails arriving at their regular Withybush roost. As usual, estimating the total was difficult because it is not easy to see all possible flight-lines as darkness falls. However, we suspect that at least 700 were present this evening. The roost location would probably have provided a reasonable amount of shelter during last weekend's storm.
