Another slog across the moor eventually turned up a pair of Whinchat and another singing male nearby. They were all in one of the few remaining areas of good habitat. From a distance much of the moor now resembles a lawn (which probably explained the pair of grazing Canada geese). Many years ago Paddy gave me some good advice - find the Reed buntings and you're likely to find Whinchat close by. So it was quite a relief to find the first whinchat shortly after watching a Reed bunting nest building.
3 Red kite and a dozen crows on a sheeps carcass. 2 Cuckoos today towards Crosswell. Just 2 Whitethroat, a handful of stonechat - all it seemed with young to feed, as were the few meadow pipits. Otherwise a much quieter moor than previous years, no redpoll, no linnet and no grasshopper warbler.
