An adult Common Crane on the bank of the Eastern Cleddau at low tide/dusk this evening near Slebech.
Location was by Oxland Wood, SN 0279 1356
Distant, but very clear views:
- far bigger than a Grey Heron feeding nearby
- Long neck, head smaller (proportionately) than heron, with a much smaller, more evenly tapered bill
- Body was larger, proportionately, than the heron, and the tail area had large curved feathers curling underneath
- Very distinct black neck, white nape and patch on the face, with a bright red patch - reminiscent of a GS Woodpecker.
Will check back tomorrow morning - it seemed to be settling down
