Marloes Mere

The Wood sandpiper was working its way along the Britton hide scrape this evening, it got flushed a couple of times, once by a grumpy moorhen, and would fly across to the middle channel but kept returning. Also a snipe, a dunlin and 2 Lapwings, maybe the two from Skokholm. The fresh westerly and saturated fields had brought in lots of Herring gulls, at least 400 on the mere and similar numbers in the surrounding fields paddling for worms, so likely close on 1,000 birds. 2 were ringed - Skomer bird(?) green, left tibia KN and Skokholm bird, red, right tarsus W:892. Duck numbers have increased now the mere's had a top up from the recent heavy downpours, c100 mallard, 20 teal and 10 shoveler. Many more sand martins this evening out numbering the swallows. Good to see regular visitors Arthur and Marilyn from Suffolk who'd found the Wood sandpiper earlier in the week, hopefully they'll turn up something better while they're here.

A look at the Gann at high tide, singles of sanderling, knot and a whimbrel plus 6 ringed plover. 3 Little egrets in the Crabhall roost.
