Some incredible numbers of large shearwaters going through Strumble today. Counts from Adrian via the Strumble Facebook page. Between 9:00-15:00 Ade had 278 Cory's shearwater, 11 Great shearwater, 28 Sooty shearwater. I believe Matthew Meehan (who left around 4pm) was on a count of 295 Cory's. Georges count after Matthew left were 18 Cory's, 2 Great, 37 Sooty. Giving a Cory's total of 313 subject to final totals being confirmed.
My own totals between 2:30-16:45 were 26 Cory's, 5 Greats, 13 Sooty. Majority of the Cory's were distant, likely 2-3 miles out, with others even further. A few of the Greats and Sootys were closer. Incredible. Adrian and Clive were the only two local birders first thing, when in one 15minute spell around 75 big shearwaters passed!
