Hook WeBS and Hook Firecrest

The proverbial game of two halves for the WeBS count earlier this week. The first, along the Western Cleddau was unusually quiet. A Redshank, a Greenshank and a Great Crested Grebe were the only birds showing. By contrast, the second, at Sprinkle Pill, showed high numbers of Canada Geese (just under 700 on the mudflats, in the pill itself and in the surrounding fields) and good numbers of Lapwing (377) and Dunlin (510). A flock of Golden Plovers milled around overhead, estimated at somewhere around 2500 birds. Other birds in good numbers here - Redshank (53), Mallard (56), Shelduck (46) and Wigeon (71).

On the way back inland along the pill, a Goshawk was hunting over the wood in Hook.

This morning, a Firecrest was a welcome visitor to the garden and hung around just long enough for a snap through the kitchen window.
