Skomer today - harriers displaying well in the sunshine

We managed to get over to the island today, our main purpose to photograph a seabird colony without any seabirds (if possible!) as a teaching aid when bringing some students out in June to count birds at the same colony. We hadn't seen the harriers but they suddenly materialised when we met up with Dave Boyle as we headed towards the farm from Skomer Head. The Montagu's was the first one to appear and provided opportunity for some distant photos. Then a few minutes later the Pallid put in an appearance - good views of both were enjoyed. The Montagu's was also seen well after lunch.

Small numbers of migrant warblers and a few whimbrel etc were seen, but there was not too much else of note on the island. But none-the-less it was nice to see a merlin dashing up and down the cliff-slides at the Wick (after a rock pipit we think) and a water rail was glimpsed a few times at the withy at north stream crossing. All in all a lovely relaxing day.
