Having aborted an attempt to survey seabirds from St David's Head (sea-state just too rough for the required method) we decided to head back south and had a lunch-stop at Newgale. Having scanned the waterfowl etc in the marsh, we were pleased to see the green-winged teal drake reported earlier in the day by David Astins. We watched the rough sea for a short while from the edge of the shingle ridge and noted several small close-in flocks of scoter, making short flights close to the very choppy surf line. We estimated about 100-150 in total, including at least 2-3 velvet scoters.
