Newgale

Enthused by Mike and Dave's recent postings of their gull finds at Newgale, we simply had to get away from the computer when the weather was improving to go and have a look at Newgale in the sunshine, arriving there about mid-day. We did not see the Kumlien's noted earlier by Mike but immediately found the adult Glaucous and noted at least 13 adult Med Gulls in the flood-zone.

The gull feeding frenzy in the surf was also impressive, with hundreds of gulls moving between the marsh flood zone and the sea, in two separate feeding flocks at either end of the beach. We were fortunate to see the 1st winter Glaucous in the flock at the Newgale end (see image two below) and briefly viewed what was presumably the same adult nearer the Maidenhall Point end later.

There seemed to be enormous quantities of food available on the beach and in the surf, including bits of crab and large amounts of wrecked shellfish etc - no wonder the gulls are taking advantage.

The images below, taken with a small CS camera aren't particularly brilliant but hopefully give a flavour of the amazing gull activity there at the moment.
