This morning, whilst examining our overnight garden moth catch at Martletwy, we heard faint calls of distant whimbrels. This was nothing particularly unusual we thought but then we realised that the calls were actually overhead and very high up. Looking straight up we were slightly surprised to see at least 56 whimbrels spiralling downwards out of the grey clouds. They probably ended up at Landshipping somewhere or in nearby fields. Certainly our highest garden count of this species. Couldn't beat Mike's lovely Emperor moth but we identified more than 25 species in our light-trap.
Yesterday there were at least 27 black-tailed godwits still present at Landshipping with as couple of dunlin. Only a small number of the godwits were in summer breeding plumage.
