Minwear/Blackpool Mill first thing; Fishguard to Newport later

An early morning BBS at Minwear-Toch Wood produced at least 6 singing wood warblers back on site hopefully to breed; siskins were on territory and blackcaps abundant - the highest number probably recorded in the last 10 years of annual BBS visits. It was nice to see redstarts back at Blackpool Mill -  a fairly regular breeding spot for this species.

Later a walk along the coast path from Fishguard to Newport produced more whimbrel flocks including at least 67 feeding in one cattle-grazed pasture field near Fishguard and smaller flocks moving along the coast including at least 15 nearer Newport. A few common sandpipers were noted along the coast. Several lesser whitethroats were singing in various places. A distant cuckoo was  heard calling briefly somewhere on Mynydd Dinas. There was a noticeable passage of redpolls with several small flocks of between 4 and 12 heading mainly eastwards. Only one kestrel was seen today - not far from Fishguard. A few sand martins were still moving north along the coast.
